摘要:Preferences between outcomes available at different times depend on a number of inter- and intra-individual factors. Dual systems models explain these influences on intertemporal choice in terms of their impact on automatic and deliberative behavioral control. Automatic control biases choices for near-term outcomes and has been linked to the brain’s mesolimbic dopamine system. Deliberative control promotes far-sighted behavior and is related to the lateral prefrontal cortex. Despite successes in applying dual systems models to intertemporal choice, recent findings challenge some assumptions of these models and controversy remains about the utility of the explanatory framework. The challenges to dual system models do not invalidate core hypotheses of the models but instead refine a mechanistic understanding of automatic and deliberative behavioral control. In this talk, I will review recent work investigating the neural basis of delay discounting with an eye towards critiquing and expanding on dual systems models developed to explain behavior alone.
