Mechanisms for increasing data sharing hold promise for accelerating discovery and transparency in neuroscience. Nonetheless, data collection in many fields, including neurophysiology, poses challenges to sharing. A major hurdle is the array of data formats in use. The Neurodata Without Borders (NWB) initiative promotes data standardization in neuroscience to address these challenges. In this talk, we will introduce the first NWB pilot project - a unified data format for cellular neurophysiology. The NWB format accommodates data from a broad array of experiments, including extracellular and intracellular recordings; calcium imaging; slice electrophysiology; EEG and oscillatory neural signals, as well as the complex metadata required to describe experimental conditions. Our presentation will include an introduction to the format structure, as well as practical pointers and resources for neurophysiologists to facilitate adoption of the format in their own labs. Through development and dissemination of a common data format, the NWB initiative aims to facilitate a culture of data sharing in neuroscience that creates novel opportunities for tool development, collaboration, and discovery.
