Wiring of the brain is strongly influenced by experience. Neurons in activated ensembles can dynamically change their morphologies, connectivity, and architectures of individual synapses. Nonetheless, animals and humans have innate behaviors whose features are consistent across generations, suggesting that many synaptic pathways are genetically predetermined and stable regardless of environment. Such hardwiring has been documented in sensory systems, but the extent of intrinsic assembly of circuits essential for high order processing of sensory information, learning, and memory storage remains poorly understood. During my talk, I will discuss recent genetic studies that elucidate intrinsic development of excitatory pathways in the mammalian hippocampus.
