The Working Memory (WM) model of Baddeley and Hitch (1974) was originally developed to explain the operation of short-term memory functions. This lecture will cover how it has been used to understand areas of speech and language processing. The most recent version of WM will be described and the proposed role of the Phonological Loop (PL) in spoken language outlined. The PL is also seen to be critical in the development of reading in languages with alphabetic scripts. Finally the lecture will cover some research carried out on children with Down Syndrome who typically show delayed and impaired memory and language capacity. Despite these problems children in this group can learn to read and there is some evidence to suggest this reading supports their language learning. These results will be considered within a WM framework.
