Abstract: Traditionally, most MEG and EEG studies adopt an event-related design, investigating the neurophysiological responses evoked by a brief sensory event. In recent years, however, a number of studies pay attention to the neural processing of continuous natural stimuli such as connected speech, music, and movies. It is shown that low-frequency neural activity can instantaneously follow various features of natural stimuli, a phenomenon called neural entrainment. In the first part of the talk, I will briefly discuss neural entrainment to high- and low-level features of speech. In the second part, I will discuss spatial filtering of MEG/EEG activity and how to design spatial filters to reliably extract entrained neural activity.
